LLES GO ARGO: a neighbourhood project bringing people together at the Vaartkom

Young people and students are giving the thirty-year-old ARGO lifeboat a new future as an electrically powered place to meet on the water.

Working on a thirty-year-old lifeboat

Like a ray of sunshine between dark clouds, this boat stands out. ARGO is a thirty-year-old lifeboat getting a new life this year. A team of committed young people and students from Leuven are joining forces to turn it into an electrically powered floating meeting place.

By young people, for young people

The goal is a sustainable boat that runs cleanly and gets plenty of use. That means replacing the diesel engine with electric propulsion for quiet, odour-free trips. Following their motto ‘by young people, for young people’, the young people take the helm themselves: they decide what ARGO will look like and how it will be used.

Opportunities for everyone

For this ‘open lab on the move’, maakleerplek brought together several partners. On ARGO, two groups connect: vulnerable young people supported by Arktos, and engineering and other students from KU Leuven and UCLL. With support from the Lions Club in Leuven, they have a unique opportunity to develop new skills.
