Brake-Out visits Jo Zanders

Every month, the young reporters from Brake-Out explore maakleerplek.

This month, they visited the workshop of Jo Zanders, one of the makers at maakleerplek. Jo builds his own drums in the Low Tech Lab and showed the young people how he works. Read what they thought below.

In January, we visited Jo, the musician and maker. What a fascinating person! He shared his dream with us and showed us his work.

Jo is very skilful. He showed us the drums he had made and explained how he puts them together. We were allowed to feel the different materials he uses. Besides making drums, Jo is a percussionist. He has a real talent for music, and even demonstrated it for us. He performs everywhere: in the street and on stage, alone and in groups — he conducts too — for people and with people, in Belgium and abroad.

Jo is also very creative. His mind is a fountain of ideas, and he develops his own inventions. He showed us a skateboard that he had turned into a musical instrument. Talk about talent!

How did this instrument maker discover his passion? Drums have been part of Jo's world since childhood. The idea of making them himself took shape after he made custom drums for children. What is Jo's dream now? ‘To keep making drums and performing for and with people. To do what I do now for the rest of my life.’
